Our baby shower was given for a teacher at my school. Invitations were given to over 50 staff members, so we needed easy food for about 40 guests. The new mom’s nursery theme was African Jungle Safari based on two recent mission trips she and her husband took to Africa. Invitations: Uprintinvitations.com – Queen of the Jungle.
Decorations: Purchased jungle themed balloons and bandannas from www.orientaltrading.com. Made a jungle diaper cake using 100 diapers, wide ribbon, and baby animal items purchased at WalMart.
Food: We wanted all cold food since the quantities were large and prep would be best the night before. We named everything in the jungle theme, made cards for each item, and put the real food in parenthesis.
Finger sandwiches: Roast Beast (roast beef & horseradish on sourdough), Wild Boar (ham and cream cheese, chive pinwheels), Jungle Meat on Bark (Cashew chicken salad on whole grain), Monkey Bites (PB & J), Jungle Vines (Greek Salad with chicken), Tropical Fruit Safari (fresh fruit platter), (cous cous salad), (spinach, strawberry, walnut, blue cheese salad).
Drinks: Tropical Tiger’s Tea (iced tea with orange slices), Nile River Water (punch), Nature’s Jungle Juice (ice water with lemon and mint leaves). Cupcakes: Ordered from a local baker who does a “Funky Monkey” (chocolate cake, peanut butter/banana cream frosting). Baker provided and decorated cake tower.
Favors: Clear votive candles purchased from World Market. Printed labels on Avery clear 2″ x 3″ labels “_____ Baby Shower, May 1, 2010, Thank You.” Diaper Raffle: Each guest who brought a package of diapers entered their name in a raffle. Mom drew 1 name at the end of the shower and gave a prize to the winner.
Games: “Measure mom’s tummy” and a “Baby Word Unscramble” we found online. Prizes: Little items I collected from the $1 store (bath items, pads of paper, etc.) placed in small colorful baskets, and wrapped up in cellophane.
